Athletes have a unique opportunity to influence and inspire others to live more sustainably. Weather you’re involved in a team sport or you’re an age group athlete, you can take steps to reduce their environmental impact and encourage other athletes to do the same. Here are ten actions that athletes can take to live more sustainably:
Start with a sustainability audit
Begin by assessing your current sustainability practices. Take a close look at the products you use, the energy you consume, and the waste you generate. Consider whether there are areas where you can reduce your environmental impact and improve your sustainability practices.
Switch to a plant-based diet
The production of animal products generates significant greenhouse gas emissions and uses a large amount of land, water, and other resources. Consider adopting a plant-based diet to reduce your environmental impact and improve your health.
Swap your car for a bike or public transportation
Transportation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consider biking or taking public transportation to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also a great way to get some exercise and stay in shape.
Use reusable water bottles and food containers
Disposable plastic bottles and food containers contribute significantly to the plastic waste problem. Make the switch to reusable water bottles and food containers to reduce your environmental impact and reduce waste. You can find my favorite Stasher Silicone Reusable Storage Bags and Glass Meal Prep Containers on my amazon favorites list.
Support sustainable brands
Research and support brands that prioritize sustainability in their products and practices. Look for companies that use sustainable materials, minimize waste, and prioritize social and environmental responsibility. A great example is Nuun Hydration who is Climate Neutral Certified
Take shorter showers
I know this one sounds crazy because athletes exercise and sweat more than the average person, but water is a precious resource, and conserving it is essential for sustainability. Take trying to take shorter showers and turn off the water when brushing your teeth to reduce your water usage.
Choose eco-friendly laundry products
Conventional laundry products contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment and can harm aquatic life. Look for eco-friendly laundry products that are biodegradable and free of harmful chemicals. Some of my favorites are Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent and Defunkify Powder Laundry Detergent
Support local and organic food
Research and support brands that prioritize sustainability in their products and practices. Look for companies that use sustainable materials, minimize waste, and prioritize social and environmental responsibility. Clif Bar and Company is one of my favorites as well as NOW Foods
Buying local and organic food supports sustainable
agriculture practices and reduces the environmental impact of food production. Look for farmers’ markets and organic food stores in your area.
Reduce energy usage
Energy usage is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Take steps to reduce your energy usage, such as turning off lights when leaving a room, using energy-efficient appliances, and unplugging electronics when not in use.
Inspire others to live sustainably
As an athlete, you have a unique platform through your network and influence. Use your influence to inspire others to live more sustainably. Share your sustainability practices and encourage others to make changes in their own lives.
By adopting sustainable practices, supporting sustainable brands, and inspiring others to make changes, athletes can play a significant role in protecting our planet for future generations.
