Phenoh 7.4 Review

**Disclaimer: I was provided a sample of PhenOh 7.4 and this post was sponsored by Sweat Pink and Fit Approach on behalf of Phenoh 7.4, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

A while back I was asked to participate in a review for a new alkaline sports drink called pHenOH 7.4 (pronounced fee-no). This is one product that I was happy to try out! Last summer I trained through the dead heat of Texas summer and I came to realize that sports drinks and water are VITAL to my training this time of year however, they are not all created equal. I blogged a little about some of my favorite ones but I struggled to find something that kept me hydrated, was easy on the GI tract, as well as easy on the taste buds. When I first heard about pHenOH 7.4 I was excited because it’s a very natural sports drink made with only 7 ingredients and the first of its kind….IN THE WORLD.

Here are some facts about pHenOH 7.4 you may find interesting:
  • Increases VO2 Max (oxygen metabolism) by up to 10%.
  • Boosts your endurance.
  • Enhances your peak athletic performance.
  • Offsets the effects of altitude on performance.
  • Buffers your acidic metabolic waste during exercise and stress.
  • The first alkaline sports drink with a pH of 7.4.
  • Helps your body maintain its natural pH level of 7.4.
  • Healthy, balanced, and refreshing!
  • Made with just SEVEN natural ingredients.
  • Non-acidic formula helps to balance the body’s pH level.
  • Organic Aloe vera provides anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as important nutrients needed for healthy recovery during and after exercise.
  • Promotes both physical and oral health and wellness.

Ok, so now let’s break all that down into real talk. What the heck is an Alkaline sports drink and why is that important?! Well, a pH level measures how acid or alkaline something is (do you remember acids and bases in chemistry class?). A pH of 0 is totally acidic while a pH of 14 is completely alkaline, so the middle or neutral zone would be a pH of 7. Our bodies pH level varies depending on what part of the body your looking at. Our blood’s pH level ranges from 7.35 to 7.45, while our stomach can be much more acidic around 3.5 (due to digestive enzymes). The pH level of your urine is going to vary depending on your diet. It may be more acidic one day if you’ve had a lot of sodas and coffee or more alkaline if you avoid caffeine and had more fruits and veggies. Excretion (urine) is how your body maintains it’s natural pH level so this is why your urine will change overtime. Your body is constantly working to maintain a natural pH level. When you have drinks like coffee or soda and sports drinks that are more acidic your body has to work to bring it back down and maintain it’s natural pH.

Fun Fact: Did you know that most sports drinks are more acidic than coffee?

pHehOH 7.4 stands apart from all the rest because it has a lower pH of 7.4, closer to the bodies natural pH. Not only that but it only has 30 calories per 8oz and is sweetened with natural agave nectar which has a lower glycemic index than the sweeteners used in other sports drinks. This makes a HUGE difference when you’re talking about GI issues during heavy physical activity and even how your body functions and preforms.

Now to the good stuff! I really wanted to test this drink in as many ways as possible to find out how my body would respond. With other sports drinks, there are certain situations that I cannot tolerate them. For example, I love Gatorade’s G2 because it has fewer calories and less sugar (still more sugar than pHenOH). However, the only time I can tolerate it is right after activity. During exercise the sugary flavor is just too strong on my taste buds and my stomach. Even if I water it down, it’s still too much for me to handle while working out. If I try to drink it later in the day, perhaps if I had an early morning workout, it gives me headaches. So, with pHenOH I really wanted to dig in and try it out in every way possible.
A whole case goes for $28
One thing I noticed right away was the extremely light flavor. My husband described it was a Dum-Dum flavor (as in the candy) I wouldn’t exactly agree. HA HA HA It does have an ever-so-sweet flavor however, it’s so subtle, as if you drinking water infused with fruit or something. You mainly taste the agave and the aloe vera. I found this extremely pleasant in the morning.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the first thing you taste in the morning is often the most flavorful? Not because the food contains more flavor but because your taste buds are more receptive.
I always try to drink one big glass of water when I wake up everyday and when I get to the gym I always carry water with me. During the testing of pHenOH 7.4 I replaced my usual water bottle at the gym with pHenOH. I was pleasantly surprised! I expected to need water mid-workout (as usual) but I never did. It wasn’t overwhelming and seemed to quench my thirst without creating more thirst, headaches, or upset stomachs.
I took a few bottles with me to work to see how they worked during normal activity and again, drank them without any issues. No headaches, no nothing. This drink is so low in calories too (only 30 cals each) that I didn’t have to worry about the impact on my daily intake either. Another bonus considering I’m packing on the pounds faster than ever since my tarsal tunnel injury.
Now for the real test. Exercise! I took this stuff with me to the pool and cycling class. I’m not allowed to run right now or I would have tried that too (I still want to know how my stomach responds to all that jumping with a tummy full of pHenOH) Even though I missed the run test, I’m confidant in this drink. It seems the harder I worked, the better this stuff did too. I drank an entire bottle during spin class when I was sweating bullets and beet red. That ended up being 20 miles of hard hard work and I can honestly say I’m, pleased with the results. Then I swam over 1000 kilometers and still felt great! I didn’t have to stop for water, I didn’t feel ill, and I know I was staying hydrated. As an endurance athlete I need something that is going to maintain my electrolyte balance and replenish my stores as quickly as I’m loosing them. One of the biggest issues I’ve had in the past is the electrolyte to sugar ratio. pHenOH 7.4 seems to be the perfect balance for me. As a nutritionist, I love that it’s made with only 7 natural ingredients, it’s low calorie, and offers a low glycemic index.

Overall this is a product I would highly recommend. I will most certainly be purchasing it from my local store. Here in Texas you can find them at Central Market and other whole food stores like it but you can check their website for your local stores or order directly from their website. With the weather heating up I really want to keep my fridge stocked. It’s so hard to find a drink that is easy enough on the stomach and provides enough to keep you going. After my spin class and swim sesh, I can testify that this stuff is legit!

Happy Running!

So glad it worked well for you swimming and cycling, I've tried it for runs but never for swim + bike workouts. Next swim workout, I'm phenoh'ing it up!

I also dislike other sports drinks that taste basically like pure, artificial sugar. But that's why Phenoh 7.4 is so great – it's pleasantly sweet and light!

  3. Agreed Dapinder! I also love that you don’t lose electrolytes with this drink. You don’t have to water down and you can drink it during exercise. I'm a believer 😉

  4. oh yes! It's perfect for swimming too because of the light flavor. I always feel like im drinking pool water but Phenoh was a pleasant change AND it kept me going.
